The World’s Smallest Dog, With the Biggest Personality in the House
Thinking about a Staffy or Chihuahua? Here’s the honest tour: the history, the quirks, the care, and the reasons 200+ of our families would do it all again.
Meet the Chihuahua and Staffy
Chihuahuas may be the smallest dog breed on earth, but they are among the boldest, most devoted, and most personality-filled companions you could share a couch with. Staffies may be bigger, but they are just as affectionate, loyal, playful, and full of character. For both breeds, size is only part of the story.
Forget the “purse dog” cliché. Real Chihuahuas are sturdy little athletes with ancient Mexican roots and strong opinions about everything—especially where they sit and when dinner is served. Staffies are energetic, people-loving dogs known for their affectionate nature, muscular build, and cheerful personalities. Both breeds bring plenty of love, loyalty, and unforgettable character into the home.

History & Origin
History & Origin
From Ancient Roots to Your Living Room
Both the Chihuahua and Staffy have proud histories and distinctive origins. The Chihuahua’s ancestors, known as the Techichi, were companions to the Toltec civilization in Mexico more than a thousand years ago. The modern Chihuahua takes its name from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where small dogs of this type were rediscovered in the mid-1800s.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, commonly known as the Staffy, originated in the English counties of Staffordshire and the Black Country. Over time, Staffies became known for their courage, strength, affectionate nature, and close bond with people. Today, both breeds are cherished family companions with loyal temperaments, strong personalities, and a proud heritage.
Temperament & Personality
A devoted little watchdog in a tiny package. Translation for your daily life:
- Loyal — often picks one favorite human and loves them with embarrassing intensity (while still adoring the whole household).
- Alert — a built-in doorbell. You’ll always know when a leaf moves outside.
- Confident — has absolutely no idea how small they are. Brave to the point of comedy.
- Affectionate — professional lap dog. Runs on warmth, cuddles, and proximity to “their” person.
- Smart — learns fast, with a light stubborn streak. Short, upbeat sessions win; drilling loses.
- Portable — apartment, office, road trip, quiet evenings: goes anywhere, fits everywhere.
Health Considerations
Both Chihuahuas and Staffies can enjoy long, happy lives, but each breed has specific care needs. Here’s what to know—and why none of it should scare you off.
Patellar Luxation
Slipping kneecaps can occur in toy breeds such as Chihuahuas. Reputable breeders screen their parent dogs, while maintaining a healthy weight can help support good joint health.
Dental Care
Chihuahuas have small mouths and crowded teeth, making daily dental care and regular professional cleanings especially important. Staffies also benefit from regular tooth brushing and routine veterinary checks.
Hypoglycemia in Puppies
Very young Chihuahua puppies can experience a rapid drop in blood sugar. We send each puppy home with detailed feeding guidance to help support a safe and steady start.
Cold Sensitivity
Because of their small body mass, Chihuahuas can feel cold easily. A warm sweater during colder weather is practical care, not just a fashion statement. Staffies generally tolerate cool weather better, but every dog should have a warm, dry place to rest.
Long, Happy Lives
With attentive care, Chihuahuas commonly live around 14 to 17 years, and some live even longer. Staffies can also enjoy many healthy years with their families. Whichever breed you choose, you are welcoming a devoted companion into your life for the long term—through graduations, moves, new jobs, and everything in between.
